Gone Vegan

Still talking about the meat thing. I gave up on eggs and cheese for the moment. Out of fear of eating nothing but complete garbage. I eat when I am driving. (When I am not at home, that is.)  So with out eggs and cheese I would have been limited to Skittles and Snickers bars. For the moment, I have just given up meat that I don't know and even that is hard. I fell off the wagon and stopped at Taco Bell, which isn't even worth it, but I was hungry and in a hurry. Forgive me - it has been 18 months since my last stop at Taco Bell.

I'd really like to give up eggs more than anyting, so I'll have to try a little harder. I mean, just eggs I don't know. I will eat the ones I know.

Dang this meat thing is hard

Ok - so the last rant was about meat. And the fact that I am not going to eat meat unless I know the source. That includes cheese and eggs...Most important eggs, because egg laying chickens are treated the worst of all animals in commercial operations.

So Saturday I went to an antique show where I was captive for about 10 hours. I went foodless and the dealer hospitality tent had muffins and coffee. And I was pretty dang hungry so I had a muffin. BAD EGGS. Then, lunch rolled around and the options were hot dogs, brats, cheeseburgers and chicken sandwiches...So I had a burger. We'll chalk that all up to very bad planning on my part.

The next day I can't remember what was for lunch, but dinner was hard too. I had a salad made with greens and sheep's feta (organic, from Whole Foods.) It cost me an arm and a leg. Today I was in a hurry but managed to find carrot-orange juice for lunch, and for dinner, more of the same arm and a leg salad from the other night.

I fear meat isn't the problem for me, it is going to be cheese and eggs that make it very difficult to live up to my own challenge. I can do without meat - but there's eggs in everything...hmm.

Back On A Food Rant

Yes, I am back with another rant about food. In particular, meat this time...sorry....

About four years ago I went to Pick N Save for a pork roast. They sell Hormel products there. I checked out the package and they were bragging on the label about some tenderness added to the pork. So I read the label and realized this wasn't just a pork roast. It was a pork roast with stuff added to it to make it more juicy and tender.  Whatever, I didn't buy it. Up until this point I didn't really think much about the meat I was buying, but in this case it wasn't just meat. It was meat and stuff.

Then there's chicken. Well, anyone that reads anything about commercial food knows that chickens are the most mistreated animals in the big box commercial food supply. This is the rant part...

The reason that chickens are so mistreated is; 1. It is easy...chickens aren't as cute as lamb or pigs. 2. We're used to cheap food and mistreated, no, tortured, chickens and eggs are really easy to raise.

So that's about the time we decided to raise meat. We wanted to know where it is coming from and that the animal had been treated as humanely as possible. We didn't want anything added to our meat (nor eggs) and we didn't want the animals to have eaten nothing but corn, whilst standing knee deep in their own manure.

We haven't crossed the vegetarian line yet, obviously, though there was a period in my life where I didn't eat meat. But, given that we do eat meat, we decided to face it. And that's gone well. There's hundreds of people eating meat from our really well-respected livestock.

This rant leads me to my latest dilemma. I decided not to eat meat unless I know the source. Duh? you ask, "Why not just eat your own meat?" - We do. We eat a lot of chicken....A LOT OF CHICKEN. But there are times when we eat outside of the house, though not very often, it happens.

I have come to a grave realization....I might starve. I might be unhappy with this decision...Why? It means no pizza at Freddies, no Tombstone pizza, no bacon for breakfast, no beef jerky in the car, NO TAMALES OFF THE STREETS OF CHICAGO????? No Polish ham, no pepperoni, NO CHEESE? NO EGGS?

Tonight I eat the last Tombstone pizza. I can't resist. But after that I think I will be left with nothing at all to eat...Given that I am in the car quite often, I seriuosly might starve. Will let you know what happens.
